Teams of 8 each representing Blackford and Caermount turned up at Bruntsfield for a delicious lunch in the Sandy Watson room in convivial company . Captain Chris Hardie of Blackford and Captain Gary Henshaw retired briefly to work out the pairings for four Greensome Matches ,the handicaps for each pair and the strokes to be conceded or given in each match .
It was somewhat daunting to have to announce at lunch that due to the strength in depth of the Caermount team it was agreed that in every match strokes needed to be given by Caermount to Blackford in accordance with the recognised formula . However the fearless Blackford team shrugged off any nervousness about their ability to rise to the challenge . Captain Gary with Gordon Higgins of Caermount teed off on time at 2.30PM against Captain Chris with Roger Mew of Blackford in the first match . The weather was warm and muggy with no threat of rain – just perfect for good golf !
The results, with Blackford named first and WHI handicaps in brackets , were as follows :-
Captain Chris Hardie ( 21.9 ) and Roger Mew ( 8.4) beat Captain Gary Henshaw ( 3.0 ) and Gordon Higgins ( 17.0) by 2 and 1
Jeff Preston ( 12.5) and Henry Robson ( 21.6 ) beat Graeme Mackenzie (2.7 ) and Richard Dickson ( 15.2) by 3 and 1 .
Colin Macpherson ( 14.7) and David Nicolson ( 16.2) lost to Alan Thomson ( 7.4) and Bill Cuthbert (12.8 ) by 4 and 3 .
Colin Glynne-Percy ( 25.7 ) and Harley Weston ( 21.8) beat Stewart Anderson (13.3) and Douglas Paterson (15.8 ) by 7 and 6 .
Many congratulations to the heroic Blackford team who stuck to the task in hand on the course extremely well today against very strong and worthy opponents !
