With some trepidation about the weather 23 Blackford members arrived to take part in the first Outing of the Season on Gullane 3.
Captain John remarked that on playing the previous afternoon at Murrayfield in the pouring rain he could not feel his fingers due to the rain and the cold east wind. However the day of this Outing had dawned clear and dry and the weather improved throughout the day.
The first group – a 3-ball – Captain John, New member Jack Duthie and long standing member Andrew Aikman played off at 14.16 with the final 4-ball led by the Secretary teeing off at 15.12. The benign conditions encouraged good scoring with everyone apart from 2 getting 30 points or more.
After a sumptuous and delicious buffet supper in the main clubhouse hosted by our Gullane members Ian McLeish and Allan Weir, the prize giving took place with Harley Weston winning on 40 points, Tom Bell was second with 39 points and Bobby Scott third, with 38 points. Bobby Scott’s gross score was 74 which was less than his age and deserves special mention.
Nearest the Pin on the second hole was won by David Macaulay and the Longest Drive on the fourteenth hole was won by Neil Blake.
Edward Hinks went to great lengths to avoid being fined; he had remembered his Blackford Tie but had forgotten his shirt! His explanation that he failed to win a bet against the Secretary and as a result “had lost his shirt“ failed to impress the Captain. But he did wear his golf shirt, jacket and Blackford Tie at the dinner and maintained successfully that the obligatory Dress Code of “Jacket and Tie”, meant exactly that!
