The Annual Match between Blackford Golf Club and Murrayfield Golf Club took place on Sunday 21 April 2024 at Murrayfield . The format was four ball better ball between full teams of eight players per side .
Although there was light rain during the round this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players who gave of their best in terms on golf and friendly banter . The Sunday lunch and green fee for the round was kindly provided by our hosts with the wine provided by the Blackford Captain in accordance with recent tradition.
At the end of lunch Past Blackford Captain Chris Hardie gave everyone a brief historical summary of the history of this long outstanding fixture . The first match had taken place in 1906 . Two years previously in 1904 Murrayfield had hosted an exhibition match between the golfing legends Harry Vardon and James Braid which boosted the status of Murrayfield as a golfing venue considerably.
Bear in mind that Murrayfield  had been founded less than 10 years previously in 1896, 7 years after Blackford.
In 1908 members of the public followed the match on the course and it was reported in the Scotsman . Since 1962 each side have played for the Adams Trophy after Jock Adams, Captain of Blackford to commemorate the historic and enduring friendship between the clubs.
Details of the history of both clubs is set out by our mutual historian and honorary member Martin Bryden who wrote the Murrayfield History in 1995 and the Blackford History in 2015
Blackford members who played this year were given a rare opportunity to view the “Tappit Hen “ Tankard given by Blackford to Murrayfield at their centenary in 1996 and also to view the Adams Trophy since it is so long since we have won it ! Sadly despite a number of Halved Matches in recent years Blackford once again failed to seize the Adams Trophy and were beaten 3 matches to 1 . Very many thanks to all who attended and to Captain Hazel Peplinksi and all members of Murrayfield Council for their very kind hospitality.
